About Professor Randel S. Carlock, Ph.D.

Berghmans Lhoist Chaired Emeritus Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership, and Founding Director, Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprise at INSEAD

The Uniquely Qualified Guide

I'm a business professor, coach, family therapist, entrepreneur, and former CEO and Chairman of a NASDAQ listed company - a powerful combination of boardroom, classroom, and clinical insights. My passion for teaching and real-world experience as an entrepreneur led me to the new field of family business over 30 years ago. I was founding director of two award-winning family business centers: one in the U.S. as the first Opus Professor of Family Enterprise at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and later, the Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprise as the first Berghmans Lhoist Chaired Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership at INSEAD.

A Foundation Built on Rigor

I have now researched and taught about entrepreneurship, family business, and coaching at INSEAD’s campuses in Asia (Singapore), Europe (France), and the Middle East (Abu Dhabi)—and now its facility in the United States (San Francisco)—for 25years. I hold Masters, MBA and PhD degrees and did postgraduate training in family and marriage therapy at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College and psychodynamic counseling at Birkbeck College, both in London. I also completed the Art and Practice of Leadership Development at Harvard University’s Kennedy School and Strategic Family Therapy Training at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto.

Randel Carlock Speaking

I'm most proud of my books, written with outstanding colleagues: When Family Businesses are Best and Strategic Planning for the Family Business with John L. Ward, and Family Business on the Couch: A Psychological Perspective with Manfred Kets de Vries. These books have been translated into several languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. A Family Business on the Moon, co-authored with Keng-Fun Loh, represents a completely new style of learning and an exciting departure from my previous academic publications. I am completing my latest book, Enterprising Intelligence: Reimagining Family Business in the 21st Century, which further explores how families can build the cognitive and emotional capabilities for lasting success.

The main theme in my work is the power of learning and personal development in creating deeper meaning in our lives. I believe that we learn three ways when we teach: First, from the class we learn how to motivate others. Second, we learn about what we are teaching. And last, we learn about ourselves. It’s only when we learn new skills, and more importantly, about ourselves and what we value, that our trajectory towards leadership and making a difference climbs exponentially.

Dreams, aspirations, hopes, and fears that are not discussed take on a life of their own. They cause pain and uncertainty—and erode relationships. Many people believe that you protect family harmony by avoiding difficult topics like family business leadership governance and ownership succession. The reality is just the opposite. When emotions or issues are ignored or repressed, they become even stronger. They cause hurt that lasts longer than if they had been dealt with at the time.

Families are organic, living and growing entities, so even if you don’t plan the future it will still happen without your thinking or agreement… provided the family and business are not destroyed by conflicts, bad decisions or … no decision.

I help families navigate their most difficult conversations—about money, power, relationships and legacy—by providing a structured, safe space to work through the drama and find alignment. For over 35 years, working with families across the globe, I’ve seen one simple truth: when families learn to communicate as a family of adults, they can make sound decisions to build a future that lasts.

I started working in this field with Randel, teaching and consulting with the best families around the world to improve their communication and strategic planning for their enterprises. But I soon felt the field of family business was only reaching a tiny fraction of the people who needed this knowledge and skills. Our own work was confined to a privileged few—INSEAD students and families, private bank clients. Yet, these families drive 70-80% of the world's GDP. Reaching just the top 1% wasn't going to make an impact, especially if our mission was to broaden the reach and accelerate the learning.

That conviction convinced us to scale. We built this digital platform to break out of that small sphere and deliver these proven tools directly to the hundreds of thousands of families and advisors around the world who want to build a lasting legacy. We began by co-creating the first interactive 360° family business assessments and the activity-based fieldbook, A Family Business on the Moon. For seven years, these weren't just theoretical tools; they were the core of our practice. We used them in our teaching at INSEAD, consulting with private banks, and workshops with families, and the results were clear: they worked.
